Beyond inputs: how the Cauduro’s precision, systems and succession deliver top rice yields

CY26 Annual Summary | Top 5% Grower Case Study - Carlisle Park

Kevin and Nancy Cauduro have farmed in the Yenda district for more than 25 years, consistently achieving high-yield results. Eleven years ago, their son Nathan joined the business, marking the next generation’s involvement.

Their success is built on a well-designed system that integrates crops and livestock, prioritises soil health and emphasises timely decision-making.

Inside the 2026 season

Reflecting on CY26, Kevin said, “We had a strong season overall. Warm conditions supported growth, but the extreme heat at flowering increased the challenge. With a dry year and limited water, every irrigation decision mattered. Despite this, we achieved a solid result.”

Managing the crop

Matilda rice was grown across two paddocks with tailored nitrogen programs and staggered sowing dates.

Crop monitoring and management decisions

The Rice Management Dashboard supports decision-making, but Kevin reinforces this with regular ‘gumboots-on’ inspections. Soil testing is a core practice, guiding nutrient management, monitoring any changes in the system and supporting long-term productivity.

Key learnings

The Cauduro’s system is built on long-term thinking, with every management decision aimed at leaving the soil in better condition. Soil health is central to their success, supported by disciplined rotation, direct drilling, integration of grazing and avoiding back-to-back rice where possible.

Their focus on system improvement is reflected in organic carbon levels of 1.8–2.1%, around double that of many local soils, demonstrating the cumulative benefit of their approach.

For the Cauduros, ease of management is not the priority. Instead, they focus on getting the fundamentals right, particularly rotation, timing and water management. This is underpinned by a strong sense of stewardship, with Kevin and Nathan continually reviewing and refining their system to improve performance over time.

Key takeaways

Farm for the long term: soil health and rotation underpin sustainable high performance.

→ Focus on system efficiency: minimise variability and inputs through smart layout and management.

Get the fundamentals right: timing, rotation and water management drive consistent yields.

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, the Cauduro family remains focused on improving soil condition, refining rotations and optimising water management. Succession planning is also a priority, with open communication ensuring the business continues to evolve and improve.

“We aim to leave the farm better than we found it.”
